The Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) works to improve the donation process and advance Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) life-saving mission.
OPOs are non-profit agencies that must meet federal performance standards and work within a heavily regulated system overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). All OPOs are subject to strict and complex rules regarding the procurement and allocation of organs and tissues. This regulatory framework allows OPOs to conduct their work efficiently, safely and transparently. Changes to the regulatory framework can either make the system more efficient or be detrimental to the pivotal role OPOs play in the donation and transplantation system.
