Surgical First Assistant
The Surgical First Assistant works alongside surgeons to recover organs for transplant and research. This role will become a subject matter expert in the various pulsatile profusion equipment that Donor Alliance utilizes.
- This role reports to the Director of Organ Procurement and works 20 24-hour on-call shifts per month.
- Assist surgeons in organ recovery for transplant. This role will also recover organs for research purposes. Become an expert in the organ recovery process and utilized equipment. This position will assist with closing procedures post-recovery.
- Help with operating room and procurement personnel education around the organ recovery process.
- Utilize a variety of profusion equipment. Example: placing kidneys on pumps.
- Learning opportunities– the world of organ donation and transplantation is ever-changing, with new innovative technologies coming out regularly. Become an expert in a variety of techniques and equipment not utilized by a typical first assist.

Qualifications & Skills
- Previous first assist experience is required. Working knowledge of operating room and personnel is needed to be successful in this role.
- Education– this role will help educate external and internal partners around the organ recovery process and surgical techniques
- Knot tying and closing experience is necessary. An interesting note about organ recovery is that the surgeries are streamlined and there isn’t a lot of variety in procedures, but we must be excellent and concise every time to honor the gift of the donor and ensure patient safety for the recipient.
- Resiliency– This role will require long hours on your feet. The ability to prioritize self-care in your off time is paramount in this role.
- While the position requires 24-hour shifts, you will not work all 24 hours. Organ recovery is unpredictable and happens at any time of day.

- $89,530 – $111,912 annually
