SUMMARY:
The Manager of Surgical Services is responsible for the day-to-day activities related to staff and events which follow the surgical recovery and preservation of an organ donor. The incumbent will develop and maintain expertise of all activities related to job functions required of a Surgical Services Coordinator. This role will also assist in directing the recruitment, development, and retention of Surgical Department staff. The activities also include input into the orientation of new staff, as well as, any special projects which may be assigned.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current certification as a certified surgical technologist (CST)
- Bachelors degree in a health science related field or equivalent experience required. A combination of experience and education may be considered in lieu of formal education
- Minimum of three years of organ recovery experience performing organ recovery procedures
- Prior leadership experience in a clinical setting How much?
- Certified Transplant Preservationist, Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator, or eligible through the ABTC.

- Must have the ability to provide clear written and oral instruction related to complex processes, communicate effectively with all levels of personnel, and to represent the organization
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Detail oriented, with ability to cope with high levels of stress and able to handle a heavy
- Must be able to simultaneously execute upon multiple complex processes, provide accurate documentation, and prioritize tasks to optimize workflow to ensure compliance with established policies and timelines.
- Ability to travel in light and commercial aircraft or drive his/her personal auto to meet all job duties and responsibilities. Current Driver’s license required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for all day-to-day activities associated with the surgical procurement and preservation of organs for transplantation which includes:
- Organizing and managing organ procurement recovery and preservation
- Complying with and implementing all applicable standard operating
- Working successfully with various staff members of STA, hospitals and transplant centers to facilitate the organ donation process to maximize the gift of donation.
- Responsible for day-to-day management and leadership of Surgical Recovery Supervisors which includes:
- Working with the Human Resources and senior management to recruit, select and hire qualified staff.
- Participates in new employee
- Prepares appropriate work assignments and schedules to ensure appropriate
- Coaches and mentors Surgical Services Supervisors.
- Initiates conflict resolution processes which includes employee counseling as
- Conducts annual performance assessments, and competency
- Monitors and controls the time accounting of surgical services
- Submit and review time sheets, activity and expense
- Review and approve PTO
- Attends and reports on Southwest Transplant Alliance surgical recovery efforts at management meetings.
- Works with the Director of Donation Optimization to develop and track performance metrics for each area of responsibility of the surgical recovery staff, including, but not limited to: clinical recovery outcomes, packaging & label competency, preservation technique, and donor chart
- Provide mentorship, coaching, support and motivation to surgical services
- Observe the surgical services staff regularly relating to a broad variety of hospital personnel, including OR nurses, Surgical Techs and transplant physicians staff.
- Complete assessments on surgical services staff expected activities to allow for professional growth and improvement within the department.

- In addition to normal 24-hour recovery call as needed, this position is responsible for administrative and clinical call necessary to observe and evaluate staff members, assist staff with problem solving and answer administrative questions related to recovery efforts.
- Assures that surgical recovery is done in compliance with all applicable regulatory standards (AATB, FDA, OSHA, state and federal laws, etc.) necessary to assure safety of organs and appropriate

- Collaborates with the Education and Development department to develop and implement programs focused towards education and training of the Surgical Services Coordinators to ensure procurement staff are properly trained and competent to perform assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Interacts with Quality Systems to ensure quality monitoring of activities related to organ procurement including: chart record review, case oversight, technical decision-making, documentation, and customer satisfaction.
