Remembering my Uncle Mark who was 15 years younger than my mother and was more like a big brother than an uncle to my sister and I growing up. I received a call one cold October morning that there had been an accident and could I come to the hospital. Upon arrival I was ushered to a private room and was told he had passed away. The details were a blur but a nurse said, “You might get a call from C.O.R.E.” I then asked what she meant because I had no idea what it was or why they would be calling. She then explained it stands for the Center for Organ Recovery and Education and told me about the organization. When I arrived home something made me look at the caller ID and I saw where they had called. Without hesitation I picked up the phone and called them back. I knew this was something he would have wanted as it was always in his nature to help others. Over the years I have received letters from those who have been his recipients. Some of the most memorable were from a woman who received his bones that assisted in her being able walk again. Another letter came from a man who can now see since he received Mark’s corneas. So while it was hard to say goodbye to someone whose life ended so unexpectedly at the age of 46, it brings much comfort to know that his gifts will continue to improve the lives of so many others. ❤️
