It was a typical Monday. My husband and I were both at work when we received a call that forever changed our lives. Our son, Lucas, made a decision that we will never totally understand. He was rushed to St. Vincent Hospital and then flown to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. Our journey began with lots of prayers. Prayers of healing. Prayers for the medical staff caring for our sweet boy. Prayers for strength to face the days ahead. We were so thankful for the week that our family was able to spend holding his hand, encouraging him to fight, and praying for even the slightest sign of progress.
One week later, the doctors came to tell us that all options had been exhausted. Following this news, two nurses came to speak with our family about the possibility of organ donation. Our knee jerk reaction was that we needed the pain to end, but the thought of something good coming out of this tragedy weighed heavy on our hearts. After a little time, tears, and conversation, we decided to allow the process of donation to play out. Our precious boy was able to be a cornea and tissue donor. We pray that his gifts will be used to bless families in need.
