On a very foggy Friday night in1998 Jon Alan went to a party with his girlfriend. After having a disagreement, he told her he was leaving and walked out of the house. She asked where her car keys were and he tossed them to her then continued to walk across the street into the path of a car driven by a man leaving another party. He had crossed in this same spot for 5 years after school to go to work.
This time he sustained a closed head injury. He was transported to the local hospital then transferred to a trauma center 25 miles away. After a CT the Neurosurgeon informed us that he had blood in his spinal cord and had a potentially fatal closed head injury. He also had a broken hand and broken leg. They drilled a hole and put in a drain. He stayed in CCU until Sunday morning when he was pronounced brain dead. We had talked about organ donation many times and I knew he wanted to be a donor. We just had to convince his older brother that it was the right thing to do. An ex-girlfriend talked to him and he agreed. My only regret was that we were not more informed and only consented to major organs. Jon Alan saved 4 lives with heart, liver, kidney and kidney/pancreas.
