AOPO Statement on the House Ways and Means Committee Public Request for OPO Information
MCLEAN, VA. (April 16, 2025) — The Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) is aware of the House Ways and Means Committee’s public request for information regarding Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) and their compliance with applicable laws and regulations. AOPO is reviewing the Committee’s letter and will work to support an accurate understanding of the critical role OPOs play in the nation’s healthcare system.
As part of their existing oversight, OPOs file annual Medicare cost reports that are subject to audit by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) or its designated intermediaries, ensuring transparency and accountability in financial operations.
AOPO urges the Committee to take careful steps in reviewing and ensuring the validity of any responses it receives to its public request. We are concerned that misinformation and unsubstantiated claims about organ donation and transplantation have directly contributed to a decline in the number of Americans who register as organ donors, which in turn threatens the lives of patients in need of lifesaving transplants.
Organ donation relies entirely on public trust in the process. OPOs remain committed to transparency, continuous improvement, and their lifesaving mission of serving donors, families, and patients awaiting transplant.
