AOPO Statement on HRSA OPTN Modernization Initiative Announcement

The Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) is aware of the announcement by HRSA regarding the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) Modernization Initiative and is following these developments closely because of the impact they could have on our mission to save and improve lives through organ, eye, and tissue donation.

We support system-wide improvements and are committed to working with HRSA to ensure we save as many lives as possible through organ donation and transplantation. It is critical that any proposed changes are evaluated carefully, thoroughly, and objectively to ensure they do not harm the lives of the patients we are working to save.

We support the recommendations made last year by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to create a more efficient and equitable system for all, and we welcome additional research into understanding our system better and improving current rules. We stand ready to work with HRSA, Congress, and other stakeholders to save more lives.
