AOPO Applauds FAA’s Leadership in Advancing Organ Transportation on Commercial Airlines

The Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) applauds the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Organ Transport Working Group for their efforts in advancing safe and efficient organ transport on commercial aircraft. Commercial aviation plays a critical role in connecting life-saving organs – particularly kidneys – to the over 100,000 patients awaiting a transplant.

The FAA’s new report, released on May 12, includes recommendations from Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) representatives, aimed at clarifying existing regulations, enhancing education and training, and creating a centralized digital information hub for air transport stakeholders. AOPO commends the FAA for its role in increasing the donation system’s effectiveness and the inclusion of key donation community leaders in guiding this process. Additionally, AOPO applauds Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne (R-TX) and Congressman Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) for authoring legislation which urged the FAA to undertake this critical initiative.
