It has only been in recent years, that I learned my grandmother, Esther, had been a cornea donor at the time of her death in 1991. My aunt shared this information with me as we talked about new job working for LifeSource four years ago.
My aunt, my dad, and two other of their siblings have all received cornea transplants within the past 20 years, all related to Fuchs Dystrophy. I’ve long been grateful for the gift of sight my dad received from two generous donors. Those gifts allowed him to continue to be active in farming, to enjoy reading good books on dark winter nights, and to watch his eight grandchildren grow in to young adults. What a blessing that has been!
To learn that my grandmother may have been able to create that gift for someone else is really amazing and she would be so proud of that.
Donors and their families are incredible heros . It’s just that simple. Thank you to all who say “yes” to the possibility of hope and of healing through donation.
